This sequence of pictures shows the removal of the crown from a large,
diseased Elm, in Gillingshill nature reserve, Fife. The Elm trees
within this area have succumbed to Dutch Elm disease, however this
need not mean an end to their usefulness as a natural resource.
By removing the crown (thereby making the tree safer as it can no longer shed dead branches) and leaving the main stem standing we create ecologically valuable standing deadwood habitats. As the tree decomposes rot holes and hollows are formed which provide shelter for birds, mammals and insects. Approximately 1100 species are associated with deadwood habitat.
The
position and height of this tree make it an ideal Buzzard's perch.
This is just one of the ways in which the skilled tree surgeon can help to safeguard future ecosystems.
